Vetronics - Bus (Pr. Pieter Van den Bossche) - 12 Jan 2021

1. Several devices are connected on a Can-bus.
(a) How can messages from these devices be prioritized?
(b) What happens when two messages collide on the bus?
(c) What are the drawbacks of this principle?
2. (a) What is understood under the term ”static” or ”dynamic” segments
on the Flexray bus?
(b) What is the specific usefulness of static segments?
(c) How are the static and dynamic segments implemented in the
frame?

Parameter Estimation using KF
Let us consider the estimation of the value of an (unknown) constant x given measurements y_n = x + v_n that are corrupted (but uncorrelated) with a zero mean white noise v_n that has covariance sigma²_v.
Write the estimation problem as a Kalman Filter problem and compute the Kalman Gain (K) and the variance of the estimation error (P)

Which are the main differences in approach between Lin and Can?
For which applications would one use Lin?

Navigation & Intelligent Vehicles (Pr. Leo Van Biesen) 2020-2021 - 12 Jan 2021 - 12 Jan 2021 - 12 Jan 2021

Explain the rho rho measurements. How to reduce ambiguities and why do we need 4 satellites not just 3.
If we have more satellites (and only 4 unknowns) how do we reduce that.
How can you get location of your phone if you can\'t rely on the satellite (Cell-ID)

Q: How many GPS satellites should be in correct orbital to guarantee worlwide fix?
A: 4 + explanation needed of course

Q: Why since last decade the healthy number of GPS satellites is higher then theoretical minimum number of needed satellites?
A: GDOP + ionosphere

Question: \"When using GPS, there is one source of error (error budget) that is really hard to model. What is it? How do we cope with it using technology?\"
Answer: This source of error is the bending of waves in the ionosphere (changes during the day due to the sun + the satellites move fast around the earth). The solution to this is Differential GPS --> explain the working principle.

Question: \"How is Course Acquisition obtained in GPS?\"
I talked about the 2 carrier waves and the fact that C/A only used one, he asked me about the PRN, what it is, what\'s its purpose, why it\'s called pseudo-random, how we can check if the received PRN is correct (cross correlation).
He also asked me general questions like how many satellites are needed for GPS, how many are there now? Why is there more than necessary? What is the height of those satellites? What is the orbit time?
